Managing key accounts and complex deals

Map the decision

In a complex deal, the daily user may speak with you while another person approves the purchase. Record stakeholders and roles: user, technical evaluator, budget owner and approver. Separate confirmed responsibilities from assumptions about influence or authority.

Maintain an account relationship rather than depending entirely on one contact. If that person leaves, colleagues should retain the need, agreements and other participants, with appropriate access controls for sensitive notes.

Break risks into actions

Create a shared plan covering scope, evaluation, contracting and handover, with an owner, date and completion evidence for each. Review dependencies: delayed technical approval can invalidate a close date even when commercial discussions are advanced.

Distinguish an expansion opportunity from an unresolved service issue in the same account. A customer may appear suitable for upselling while waiting for a previous problem to be fixed. Share context so sales does not make a new offer over an unmet support commitment.

Review the account beyond one deal

An account review should include open deals, renewals, commitments and relationship risks. Many meetings do not necessarily indicate support from a decision maker. Examine missing stakeholders and steps without an owner on the customer’s side.

Use Naffes customer records and linked deals to collect context before discussing blockers internally. Refresh summaries before review meetings so the team spends its time deciding rather than reconstructing history.
