Sales reporting: connect metrics to decisions

Start with an operating question

Choose a question such as where deals stall before proposal or which sources produce qualified opportunities. State the decision that an answer would change, then select measures. A dashboard with many charts can obscure the problem when readers cannot identify the next action.

Document each metric’s definition, source, period and exclusions. A win rate needs an explicit deal population and treatment of open opportunities. Agree on timezone, currency and test-data exclusions before comparing teams.

Compare like-for-like cohorts

Segment by arrival date or deal type when sales cycles differ. Do not judge a new source using opportunities that have not had time to close. Show sample size beside percentages: a high rate from three records is different from the same rate across hundreds.

Inspect underlying records behind unusual values. A sudden pipeline increase may come from a duplicate or incorrect currency. A chart locates a question but does not explain its cause. Preserve a path from each measure to the records behind it.

Assign an action and owner

During reporting reviews, record a decision, owner and follow-up date for selected problems. Deals without follow-up call for a repaired handoff or task process, not merely a request for better numbers. Limit simultaneous changes so their effects remain interpretable.

Revisit whether the action happened and whether the measure changed as expected. Use Naffes dashboards or reporting available in the relevant plan to gather evidence, and retain metric definitions independently of any individual’s memory.
